Preface

Preface is basically an introductory or a preliminary portion of a book, research or any other scholarly work, written by the author of the text. When someone other then the author writes this introductory part it is called a foreword.  Its purpose is to give a brief overview and background of the upcoming text by conveying the purpose, scope, plan, permissions to use the copyrighted material, and the target audience. It might also contain acknowledgements, thanking authorities or people contributing towards the successful completion of the text. Preface and introduction are generally thought of as similar terms but they differ. Preface generally contains information outside the bounds of the text’s subject. On the other hand, an introduction is related to the subject of the text.

Generally in a preface you can find answers to questions like what is the text all about? What does this text offer? What are the prerequisites? Who is the target audience? Who are the people and authorities involved in its development? Etc.
