Five Paragraph Essay

Five Paragraph Essay, as the name describe, is an essay consisting of 5 (five) paragraphs. The outline of a five-paragraph essay together with a brief introduction of each paragraph is discussed below.

Introduction

The first and also the most important paragraph of any essay, not necessarily a five-paragraph essay, is the introduction. It’s the first impression of an essay and as “First impression is the last impression” thus it is of great importance. The basic purpose of an introduction is to introduce in an interesting and enthralling fashion, the theme or the thesis statement of the essay. A good introduction can present a vivid impression of even the driest topic and develop a hunger to read more of the essay. There are lots of approaches to develop a perfect introduction and one can adopt any, as long as the idea behind an introduction is not violated. Some possible suggestions regarding a good introduction are:

  • Introduction may contain facts and figures regarding the topic. Strong and reliable facts and figures not only give an idea about the essay but also show the writer’s grasp on the subject.
  • Introduction may express the thesis statement with the help of a story or tale. It is just another interesting way of capturing attention of reader and simultaneously conveying the main idea.
  • Introduction can also be a simple description of the theme of an essay. A short yet informative descriptive type introduction is powerful enough to draw the attention of the reader by forcing him to think that this essay is different from the others.

There are many other ways in which one can compose an effective introduction for example an introduction may contain a contradictory statement, a funny remark or an element of sarcasm. Use whatever approach you what but remember the main objective of a good introduction “Not confusing, attracting and interesting, related with the central theme and last but definitely not the least, effective.”
