Brainstorming Process
The actual process of brainstorming entails penning down any word or thought that comes to mind about the subject or theme. During this process writers frequently come up with ideas they did not even know they had somewhere in their mind.
To make it easier, think of the brain as an onion, and each idea is a layer of that onion. When one idea written down, it peels off a layer and exposes the layer beneath. Then when that second layer is peeled off, the writer can get to the one underneath, and so on. Ultimately when all the ideas are emptied out, the writer has a long list of ideas that he/she can now search through and employ. It is essential to bear in mind that if that first layer is not peeled off, you will never find what is below.
Generally the high-quality ideas start five or six items down the list.
It is suggested that these ideas should be written down as headings. These ideas are any opinions, beliefs, information or thoughts that you already have about the topic. (Ede 59) The use of research tools such as Google and FAQs in order to get inspiration is also a good idea. The writer may also use a thesaurus or dictionary in case of word-related problems; this is almost always profitable. When brainstorming for original ideas, do not edit ideas in the start even if they sound stupid at that stage. Just pen them down and leave the censoring part for later. This is because the basic brainstorming stratagem is to postpone judging the worth of the ideas till the time the final list of ideas is ready. Jumping to conclusions limits the gush of fine ideas. When your ideas are judged at the same time they are articulated, you are likely to be concerned about if the ideas are good or bad, and fewer good ideas this way are generated.
